The new 148,065 square foot Lakelands Park Middle School is located in the town of Kentlands/Lakelands, Maryland and was designed by Grimm and Parker Architects of Calverton, MD to fit the "New Urbanist" fabric of the community. As this is one of the largest middle schools in Maryland, the site was extremely tight and many of the fields are shared with an adjoining park that is run by the City of Gaithersburg. Our construction schedule and activities dovetailed the construction of the park.
Serving 990 students, with core support spaces for 1,200, the new facility provides program spaces for Grades 6-8. Each grade is divided into two teaching teams, two teams per floor, one grade per floor with the three grades stacked vertically. The middle school philosophy of team grouping fosters an atmosphere of cohesiveness by grade level that is reinforced by the building design.
The structure is steel bearing for the three story classroom wing and masonry bearing for the gym and music wing. Many green building features were incorporated into the construction, including energy recovery units and low flow plumbing fixtures.
Site features include a new parking lot, tennis and basketball courts and storm water management facilities.
