The National Lutheran Home and Village Lobby Renovation project, designed by RLPS Architects, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, renovated the main lobby area to provide a more open and inviting entry experience for residents, employees and visitors. Continuing our 27-year relationship with the National Lutheran Home, we were committed to meet the demands of this project which involved a condensed timeframe while working in a high traffic area of an occupied space.
The existing lobby was an open area, dated back to the building’s original construction in 1979. The updated space features wood paneling and detailed trim work to bring a sense of warmth and home to this busy space which provides the first impressions of the community.
Construction on the project was challenging since the lobby serves as the main entrance to the entire facility for visitors and the Home’s 420 employees, each of whom pass through at least two times per day. The lobby also serves as the access point for emergency personnel, so accommodations were needed to enable them to pass through the work area at a moments notice. Also challenging was the relocation of all low voltage systems (fire alarm, intercom, sound, nurse call, phone) which had to remain operational at all times. A functioning front desk was needed throughout the process, to accommodate ongoing receptionist duties including greeting the public.
The scope of work included complete removal of all existing trim, flooring, ceilings and wall finishes and provision of new metal stud framing, drywall and extensive millwork/wood trim. Building system upgrades, including electrical, mechanical and plumbing, as well as fireproofing were also necessary. The installation of a new gas log fireplace required venting through the roof. The 17 sheets of new wood paneling had to be shipped in from Florida, due to a limited supply of only 18 available in the country.
All work had to be substantially completed between scheduled public events allowing only six weeks to complete the project. To meet this demanding schedule, we worked numerous 24 hour shifts. The reinvented lobby area now serves as a source of community pride welcoming residents, employees and guests.
